  • Van Stewart - Head Coach

    Van Stewart grew up playing and coaching rugby in Sydney, Australia. He moved to the United States to play professional rugby for the Houston SaberCats for two seasons where he played as a lock and flanker.

    He then moved to Austin where he became the assistant head coach for the University of Texas in 2022 before taking over as head coach for the 2023/24 season. Now as the head coach Stewart is looking forward to creating a deep rugby culture with the Longhorns community and grow the sport in Austin and Texas.

  • Mark Rooney - Assistant Coach

    Mark Rooney was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. Mark's rugby journey began at the age of 5, and he played his high school rugby at Blackrock College in Ireland where he clinched the Senior Challenge Cup in his final year. He went on to continue his playing career playing division 1 rugby in both Ireland and New Zealand.

    Alongside playing, Mark has coached rugby in Ireland, New Zealand and now the United States and works within the sports management space. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to UTs rugby program and is excited to continue to grow the program.

  • Russell Webb - Assistant Coach

    Russell Webb was born in Hong Kong and went to Tonbridge School in England before attending the University of California, Berkeley. At Cal, he won 5 CRC VIIs national championships and 2 XVs Varsity Cup national championships.

    Post college, Russell played professionally for the Hong Kong Sevens national team where he won 2 Asian championships, one Asian Games and played in a Rugby World Cup.

    Now, living in Austin, Russell is coaching the backs and is looking forward to helping unlock UT Rugby’s incredible potential, whilst implementing dangerous, attacking, fee-flowing rugby, as well as growing the rugby community within the university and the city of Austin.
